On October 11, 2024, at 1820 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-28, N5006W, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Louisville, Kentucky. The private pilot sustained minor injuries, the flight instructor sustained serious injuries, and two people in an automobile received minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. According to the private pilot, the purpose of the flight was a familiarization and check out in the airplane. After approximately 1 hour of flight time, they began to head back to the departure airport. While on final approach to land, the engine had a complete loss of power. The flight instructor took control of the airplane and performed a forced landing on a grass median, adjacent to a nearby road. During the forced landing, the airplane impacted a light pole and an automobile, resulting in substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage. The wreckage was retained for examination.
